REMEMBERING ANA-KARINA SCHNEIDER
I first met Ana-Karina in 2002 when she was a fellow at a Salzburg Global Seminar symposium on ethnic pluralism in the U.S. Soon after she became my student at Smith College where, after a year of intensive study and the writing of a fine thesis, she received a Diploma in American Studies.
We stayed in touch after she returned to Romania.
About a decade ago, she invited my wife, Hedy, and me to lecture at her home university in Sibiu. We spent almost a week there with Ana as our host and guide — and our mentor on all things Romanian. It was a memorable visit and, sadly, the last time we saw her in person.
From the first time we met to that last visit, I was impressed by Ana-Karina’s intelligence, her perseverance, her sunny disposition, her quiet manner but forceful voice on many issues of mutual concern. Now that voice is silent, but her memory lives on in our minds and in our hearts.
